The US Presidential election – don’t count your chickens!
Joe Biden appears to be the favourite for the Presidency if polls are to be believed. However, Democrats are clearly not counting their chickens after Trump’s unexpected victory over Hilary Clinton last time out.
Unpredictability exists around how to vote safely in the midst of lockdowns, the influence of fake news and Trump’s use of social media to undermine the opposition’s credibility. How will the markets react? Tune in to our webinar on the 22nd for an insight into what may happen.
Brexit… Cake and eat it!
Today, Boris Johnson and his cabinet apparently decide whether to abandon trade talks with the EU after not hearing a more positive and conciliatory tone from Brussels. There seems to be mixed messages from European leaders which appear at odds with official communications.
As was reported in Bloomberg this morning, officials on both sides said that the exchanges had increased the risks of the UK walking away, and ultimately crashing out of its post-Brexit transition period without an agreement. That would mean millions of businesses and consumers would face additional costs and disruption when Britain leaves the single market on 31st December.
The issue is all too familiar. The UK wants to maintain access to the single market but, in a bid to regain “sovereignty”, it does not wish to adhere to EU regulations. No wonder negotiations are not getting anywhere. Have your cake and eat it comes to mind!
